As the cruise ship arrived in Venice, I had come to terms that I would not get to visit the beautiful city after all. Because our ship arrived at the port at 9am and the flight back to Toronto was at 1pm, it was impossible to get the couple to the canals to do one final post wedding shoot.
On any other occasion, I would have been furious to hear that my flight was delayed. When the announcement was made that the flight was delayed by five hours, everyone in the line for the Air Transat flight to Toronto winced… Except for me! I knew that it was now possible to make the 45 minute water taxi trip to Saint Marks Square, do a post shoot with the couple and make it back in time to catch our flight.
I immediately spoke with the couple to see if they were up for it and if they had a nice change of clothes handy. It was affirmative on both counts. I instructed them to cut the line to the check in counter and use their wedding as an excuse. It worked like a charm and within 10 minutes we were purchasing tickets on the express water taxi to yet another international landmark. This was the Boston Avenue 2010 European Tour! Bari, Olympia, Istanbul, Dubrovnik and now Venice for “La Finale Grande”!
As soon as the boat docked we got to work and because I know the city, I knew exactly where to go to get some quality shots away from the tourists. We explored some canals not too far off from our drop off point. The photographs we got were magnificent. In my opinion, there are not many places on earth you could have got a more romantic setting. We worked for a while and with 45 minutes to spare we sat down in the square for a light lunch to celebrate. As a bonus, I even had time to do some of my own portfolio work in Venice!
To top this whole fantastic experience off, as we arrived back at the Airport with time to spare, we looked out the window and it began to pour down rain. By only mere minutes, I still held my streak of it never raining on me! Can you imagine that???
As I write this blog entry in my 5th hour of flying over the Atlantic, I can’t help but think in less than a week I will be boarding a plane to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico to do it all over again. Stay tuned folks!
