Dubai: Las Vegas of the Middle East

I have been to Vegas numerous times, so I thought I had an idea of what “over the top” is. I was mistaken.

Dubai is a place that you cannot truly understand until you get here. In addition, you cannot really appreciate it unless a local shows you the hidden, off the beaten path gems. This is where my old friend Carlo came in. Carlo moved here 8 years ago before the boom. He saw the city explode all around him, so knew all the hotspots and every great place to eat. We felt like locals (minus the sheik outfits), going to places that people that have been living here for years had not heard of.

The city is inspiring, showing what humans are capable of imagining and creating from nothing. It also shows what humans can produce with a limitless cash pool. This will be a stark contrast from some of the Areas we will be visiting in Africa. Multi-million dollar chandeliers and exotic cars will be replaced with mud huts and hunger.

It has only been 3 days since I have left home and I have already been floored by the wealth and excess of this small country. I can only imagine how seeing the other end of the spectrum will affect me.
