As I made my way out of San Francisco and down the pacific coast highway, it was a little chilly but I did not come all this way to drive the PCH with the top up. I donned a hoodie, cranked the heat and sucked it up. I was only about 20 minutes into the two hour drive when I spotted a line of colourful cars from a distance stopped at a light. As I came closer I realized it was nine Lamborghinis in various vibrant colours! If you know me, you know I am a car person, and my dream car of choice is of course the Italian Bull. I’m smiling like a kid in a candy store, as I dropped the hammer and tried to catch the entourage before the light changed. My rental Mustang was only a V6, but as I said in a previous post it was much peppier than the previous V6s I have driven with 300 horses under the hood.
This was the last stop light for a while which prompted the bulls to let their 10 and 12 cylinders breathe deep breaths and again put a huge, ear-to-ear smile on my face. The PCH offers amazing roads with “S” bends, chicanes and blind corners that can only be rivalled by the roads in New Zealand. You truly feel like you are in a car commercial!
As they sped up to over 120 mph (180 km), I followed suit, albeit a little less quickly. I had my SLR in my lap and at every safe moment I was snapping photos of them flying around bends and around corners. All of this with the California coastline and greenery as a backdrop, this was the highlight of my entire California adventure. My two plus hour drive quickly became a short one at speeds of over 200 km/hr in the straights and up to 100 km/hr through bends.
As the Bulls pulled over for a rest, I did the same to get some static shots of the auto art and to talk to the owners. It turns out that this is the Lamborghini Club of America and there are over 30 cars in the convoy. The owners had shipped their cars from all over the country to drive the California coast. There was even an owner from Italy who had shipped his Bull halfway across the world to do the drive with the group.
As they got back in these slick machines I chose to just sit back and let them go as I snapped from ground level and listened to the music of their screaming, rear mounted engines.
It seems as though every time I check off an item on my bucket list, I come up with a new one to replace it. I have checked off “driving the PCH in a convertible Mustang”, I have just added “Drive the PCH in a Lamborghini”!
