Without a doubt, this has been my busiest wedding season to date. I had a few weeks free in August so I decided to get away and relax while doing some more portfolio work. Destination… California!
From there I planned kick my feet up and hit Vegas for a weekend. Vegas does not offer much in my genre of Travel Photography, but I still try and see it from a creative angle every time I go. This was my 13th time in Las Vegas and I can never get enough. It is a great time no matter how many times you have been.
The food is usually my weakness in Vegas as I am not a gambler. This is the problem! As some of you may know, one of my hobbies is fitness modeling. The next competition that I am to compete in is fast approaching, so my willpower was stretched to its limit this past weekend. I only went to one Buffet at the Rio and I managed to eat healthy, even though severe temptation was all around me!
As far as nightlife goes, you will not find a city that is more fun than Vegas. Jet at the Mirage is our usual spot on Friday nights and we tried a new place called Eve at the new City Center hotel complex on Saturday. It was fantastic. Not the boring top 40 music that Vegas is notoriously known for. They were spinning deep house and trance and the crowd was slave to the DJ. All in all, a fantastic weekend getaway.
Back to Los Angeles and it was back to business. There were a number of things I needed for my portfolio and I had a plan that would take me approximately 2,500 kilometres in 3 days. I picked up my Convertible Mustang (what else???) rental from Hertz and got started. First stop was a 102 year old restaurant named “Philippe’s”. This place is a landmark and I cant wait to go back! It is the birthplace of the “French Dip” sandwich. I will not tell you any more, you will just have to go and try one yourself. I can say for certain that it is worth the flight from Toronto to L.A. just for one of these!
Venice Beach is always a great place to photograph colourful people through a long lens. It offered many great opportunities and was a fantastic afternoon. You will see the results in my website update that will be coming once I am back from Europe and Mexico.
The next leg of my Wild West Adventure is to head north for some of California’s natural beauty. For that, you will have to stay tuned for the next blog entry. Can anyone say… Pacific Coast Highway???
